Truck Tonnage Continues to Fall

by Diligent Delivery Systems on July 31, 2009

Transport Topics magazine recently reported that truck tonnage decreased 13.6% in June compared with a year ago. That decrease was even greater than May’s 11% decrease from the same month in 2008, and was the largest monthly decrease in the 2008-2009 year-over-year cycle.

An American Trucking Associations representative has stated that he anticipates more of the same in the coming months, with no signs of a foreseeable, significant rise in freight tonnage.

Along with other economic indicators, this points to a continuation of the lean economic times the transportation industry (along with the rest of the world) currently faces.

Coupled with rising insurance and other employee related costs, and unpredictable fuel prices, these issues have companies who rely heavily on reliable and affordable transportation of their goods to maintain a healthy balance sheet wondering where to turn.
